These are abbreviations I have added to my reference materials or abbreviations about which I have been asked since I started this web site several years ago. This is a working list.
ABMD: anterior basement membrane dystrophy
ACF: anterior cervical fusion
ALIF: anterior lumbar interbody fusion
AFP: afferent pupillary defect (heard in physical examinations)
BAPS: biomechanical ankle platform system (see TERMS/TOPICS, PHYSICAL THERAPY for details)
BIA: bioelectrical impedance analysis (see TERMS/TOPICS, INFECTIOUS DISEASE for details)
BIVR: beta-lactam antibiotic-induced vancomycin resistant MRSA. Some MRSA have emerged showing antagonism to the combination of vancomycin and a beta-lactam antibiotic. These MRSA are called BIVR.
BMD: bone mineral density (in DEXA scans)
C/C/E: clubbing/cyanosis/edema (in physical examination, sometimes dictator may say "c slash c slash e.")
CCP: anti cycliccitrullinated peptide (lab test)
CIBP: chronic intractable benign pain
CIV: continuous IV
CIVI: continuous IV infusion
CMP: Case Management Program (goes along with a national HIV study + buprenorphine)
CRV: community-acquired respiratory virus (SeeTERMS/TOPICS, INFECTIOUS DISEASE for details)
dental field blocks for buccal anesthesia:
1. AMSA: anterior, middle superior alveolar (injection anesthetizes multiple maxillary teeth with one injection).
2. ASA: anterior superior alveolar.
3. IO: infraorbital (a block modification, substitute for the ASA & MSA, therefore one less injection).
KSHV: Kaposisarcoma-associated herpesvirus (seen in HIV/AIDS)
LEEP: loop electrosurgical excision procedure. Gynecology procedure. May sound like dictator is saying "LOOP" but if it is a gynecology procedure, it would be LEEP.
MGUS: monoclonal gammopathies of undetermined significance. This abbreviation is in my older version of Sloane's Medical Word Book, but not the new version.
M/R/G/L/H/T: murmurs/rubs/gallops/lifts/heaves/thrills (in physical examination, may hear dictator say "m slash r slash g slash l slash h slash t")

NKF-DOQI: National Kidney Foundation-Dialysis Outcomes Quality Initiative
NKF-K/DOQI: National Kidney Foundation-Kidney/Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative
UKM (could sound like You-Com): urea kinetic modeling (for following Kt/V with dialysis patients)
VB3 test: voiding bottle 3 (# of bottles for test). Consists of two tests: expressed prostatic secretion and post-prostatic massage urine. Used as a screening test for prostatitis.
